OpenAI declares ‘code red’ as Google catches up and pushes ahead in the AI race

We had long talked about how Google had a ton of great tech internally but was reluctant to release it. It looks like with competition forcing their hand to polish and release their work they are certainly scaring the likes of OpenAI. As the tides turn we’ll wait and see how OpenAI responds.

Superpower brings new energy production device to market to power AI data centers

Boom Supersonic has raised $300M to build natural gas turbines to power data centers for Crusoe. While Boom is an aircraft startup they recognize the growing need in the country for increased power production and are taking a stab at this new product to fill that gap.

Orchids is being touted as the first vibe coding IDE

These super tools keep hitting the market claiming to be an agent, IDE, browser, backend and payments all in one. If true this will be like having a developer that can build alongside you and take actions against instructions. We’ll have to try it out.

Android XR Event

Multiple updates were presented at the Android Show that was focused on Android XR. This includes Likeness, PC Connect, Travel Mode and a sneak peek at their spectrum of devices ranging from VR headsets to AI glasses all powered by Gemini.

Project Aura will be the first Android XR smart glasses from Google and Xreal

PCMag was able to get their hands on two development kits for Project Aura which were monocular and binocular (1 eye vs 2 eye) displays powered by Android XR. These glasses are similar to Meta Ray Ban Displays in terms of their form factor and primary use cases but the addition of a binocular display in addition to the monocular option is a step forward that most consumers will be happy about. We do have 2 eyes ya know.

Samsung’s Galaxy XR now has their own realistic avatar to compete with Vision Pro Personas

With the first major Android XR update comes the beta of Google’s Likeness which is their realistic avatar system. Looking very similar to Apple’s Personas these avatars give you a realistic presence around other humans that are using 2D video calling software. The question that comes to mind is when will Meta join the fray with their codec avatars?

Meta sends mixed signals about the future of the Metaverse

With internal memos making their way into the public, it looks like Mark Zuckerberg and his executives are pushing for a more sustainable business model. With many reports saying that the failed bet is dead TechCrunch is reporting that one of the major updates is the their next mixed reality glasses are being delayed to 2027 to “get the details right”.

Robotics

Mercado Libre to deploy Agility Robotic’s humanoids

This partnership will integrate Agility Robotics’ revolutionary Digit humanoid robot into Mercado Libre’s facility in San Antonio, Texas. Digit will initially focus on tasks that support commerce fulfillment, with the companies planning to explore additional use cases where AI-powered humanoids can augment logistics operations across Mercado Libre’s warehouses in Latin America.

CEO fights his own robot and gets knocked down

The chief executive of Zhongqing Robotics was kicked to the ground by their own robot the Zhongqing T800. While he was wearing protective gear, the robot gave him a mighty kick and sent him flying to the ground. It’s impressive and ironic that some of the most public demonstrations of robotics these days are leading us right towards Terminator.

Transportation

Waymo recalls robotaxi software after school bus incident

After their vehicles illegally passed stopped school buses Google voluntarily recalled their Waymos in response to multiple incidents across different states. While there were no injuries this is yet another example of the wide range of situations we find ourselves in as drivers that robots are learning how to handle.

Grok is being promoted in your Tesla to backseat driver

As part of their 2025 holiday update Tesla announced that Elon’s AI chatbot Grok will now be able to assist drivers when it comes to destinations and directions. They can naturally converse with the AI in order to set or update their navigation and brings us one step closer to living in a sci-fi movie where our cars are sentient and talk to us.

Inc.

Would you look at that, Rivian is building an AI assistant also

In their push to become vertically integrated like our pals at Tesla, Rivian is pursuing the creation and deployment of an AI assistant for its drivers. More details will be announced at their AI & Autonomy day which will be livestreamed at 12pm ET on December 11th.

Space

Data centers is the latest trend picking up massive momentum

Not only are startups like Galactic Brain aiming to put AI data centers in orbit, you also have influential figures like Google’s Sundar Pichai dropping “space data centers” every time he’s interviewed.

The war for the future of entertainment heats up in a battle of giants

Netflix and Paramount are in an all out race to scoop up some of the biggest media assets on the planet from Warner Bros. Whomever lands this deal will surely become the largest entertainment company with the most diverse set of content that will be appealing to consumers around the globe. Netflix’s offer has been accepted but that didn’t stop Paramount from initiating a hostile takeover with a massive bid of their own.

Our vision

One of the biggest M&A battles of our time is becoming quite the spectacle. We thought Netflix had it in the bag but Paramount is jumping in from the top ropes with a hostile takeover attempt and massive media push by their leadership. Honestly, I’m not sure which outcome would be better.

If Paramount succeeds they’ll own most of the biggest entertainment brands and TV channels. If Netflix succeeds it’s a win for streaming and comes with a potential shift in theater strategy for big ticket movies. Next week we’re going to take a deeper look at the state of streaming and entertainment and report on the latest updates in this war for the future of entertainment.

OpenAI’s red alert seems warranted as Google’s suite of AI tools become some of the most powerful on the market across multiple use cases. Our work in Copilot lately has also shown us that overall the AI race is getting to a point where consumers can find good products from multiple companies. While I think that OpenAI is going to be around for a while, I’m not sure if they have anything up their sleeve that will fire back at Google before the end of the year.

The world of robotics seems keen on replacing human workers in manufacturing and transportation while also rushing towards the world of Terminator where robots are kicking the crap out of their CEO. I’m glad to see robots join the workforce to help humans and tackle jobs that are dangerous but not so much about them being trained to fight — which I guess was inevitable knowing human nature.

Lastly for this week Google and Meta both made headlines in spatial computing. Google’s Android XR provided more clarity on their lineup of devices with a sneak peak at Project Aura which is a step towards real AR glasses partnered with XREAL. Google is back again the failure that was Google Glass over a decade ago while Meta is pushing for a more sustainable business model internally.

The public is trying to interpret Meta’s new strategy and while there are opinions flying in every direction one thing is clear. With increased competition comes updates in strategy and spending. The focus on quality and delays in upcoming products could be a sign that Meta is preparing for a big push to remain the market leader in this new computing category.
