My bet is that within 18 months, AI watermarking becomes a baseline expectation baked into every major enterprise software contract, and the developers who ignored it will be retrofitting compliance into products that were never designed for it.

Our Vision

The counterargument worth taking seriously: watermarking and platform labeling are only as meaningful as enforcement, and enforcement depends on who holds the detection keys.

Anthropic controls Claude's watermark decoder. Spotify controls what gets labeled. Google controls what counts as "AI-generated" in Search. The infrastructure for AI provenance is being built by the same companies that benefit most from shaping how it is interpreted. A world where every piece of content carries a verifiable origin sounds like accountability. It could just as easily function as a moat: incumbents with certified-human pipelines float to the top of recommendations, while challengers without approved provenance infrastructure get structurally demoted before the market decides whether their work is good.

If the bet in The Take is right and watermarking becomes a contractual baseline, the builders who will absorb that requirement most painlessly are the ones who already treat their AI usage as an auditable layer rather than a background process. That means logging which model generated what, keeping human review in the loop on anything customer-facing, and not architecting systems where the provenance question becomes unanswerable six months after launch.

The Cursor-plus-Origin story matters here too: a vertically integrated development environment owned by SpaceX with its own code hosting has strong incentives to build provenance and compliance tooling directly into the stack. The developers who end up on that platform get those tools for free. The ones on fragmented toolchains will be buying them later at a premium.
